This week it has come to the attention of SHOP PC that some local customers are being cold called by a fake technical support company. One customer advised that they bogus callers said "they were working with Microsoft and that their PC had viruses, and needed to be fixed". In some cases the caller claims to be from BT or anther ISP or one of these fake tech support firms : supportonclick, systemrecure and logmein123.com
The main aim of these scammers is to obtain credit card details, they may do this by 'selling' you fake software to clear up the non existent issues, or getting you to install remote access software, which they will use to obtain information from your PC.
SHOP PC advises that, just like banks, Microsoft or third party tech support copanies will not make calls to you asking for personal details. The recommendation is, do not let an unknown person gain access to your machine, and do not give them credit/debit card information. If in doubt, get your machine checked out by a local IT services business (like SHOP PC).
